Internship

Day 13 (Saturday, June 24)

This was my first real day off in a long time. Whew. I have been on the go for about a month now. First, I had a tough end-of-semester with two straight weeks in which I wrote who knows how many essays and read who knows how many chapters. Then I had finals followed by a week full of graduations.

The day after my graduation I hit the road toward Chicago. It took me six days to get here and I did get a chance to relax along the way, but it still wasn't much of rest.

I arrived in Chicago, spent a day learning the city and then headed to Florida for that intense week working with the Latino Reporter Digital. Got back on Sunday and started my internship on Monday. Whew! Just typing it makes me tired again.

Today I woke up late, around 11 a.m. Went out for a jog. Then came home to clean up my mess in my room. I went downstairs to see if Diego was around so I could see what he was going to be up to. He noted that he was on his way to his brother's place to watch the Mexico vs. Argentina World Cup soccer game. I tagged along. There I met his friends and his brother's roommate. They all seem pretty cool.

Man, that soccer game was a heartbreaker. First of all, I've had my thoughts about how far Mexico would go in the World Cup tournament. To my surprise, Mexico displayed a great performance and it didn't budge against Argentina, which a lot of experts say is going to win the cup. Mexico gave Argentina a scare. First by scoring the team's lone goal in the fifth minute. Later, by holding them to a 1-1 tie through 90 minutes sending the game into overtime. That's when a spectacular shot by Maxi Rodriguez from about 22 yards went through the left corner of Mexico's goal to mark the eventual game-winning shot. Wow! Such a great game. Mexico displayed a great game and it did so with two of its starters leaving the game in the first half because of injuries. That brings out a lot of "ifs". I won't go down that rout. NO IFS. Mexico had a great game and that's that!

The rest of the game was pretty laid back. I went home and continued my home cleaning. Then watched television and continued to get caught up on my sleep with a nap here and there.
