Day 64 (Monday, August 14)

© The Associated Press
Last week was such an important week because I was able to
get images of very important people. Today that trend continued
as I was sent to shoot U.S. Attorney General Alberto Gonzales.
One of the coolest things about working for the Associated
Press is the chance of doing large-scale assignments. There's
nothing wrong w/ doing community news and stuff like that. But
there's something cool about just being able to go from big
assignment to big assignment.
One of the things that I have learned during the internships
is that you must have some experiences in the small-scale stories.
While I understand all of us want to make it to the New York
Times, Washington Post, USA Today, Associated Press and others,
students and interns should understand the importance of the
small community-based newspapers.
That's where you learn how to be a good journalist.
One must understand that while working on community-based publications,
one can make some mistakes and learn from them. The ideal thing
would be to get experience and then move up.
I know that if I were to make photos of Mr. Gonzales today
and I didn't have some experience in covering minor events,
I might have blown the opportunity to do my job.
It's pleasing to know that I can count on my experiences at
the small publications in order to be able to do my job today.
