Day 31 (Sat., Oct. 1)

Today was pretty lay back. I worked a little today. Actually, I worked all morning, but it seemed as if I worked a little bit. The day started by traveling north to Lake Worth, which is in Palm Beach. There is a population of Mayan people there and we are doing a story on them.

First, I headed to the Guatemalan-Mayan Center in downtown. There is a group of Mayan kids who get all kinds of help learning new things. Today Cindy, a photographer in the area, was teaching them about photo editing -- how ironic. Turns out Cindy has worked for a few major magazines and actually worked in Mexico City. How cool is that. She's a graduate of San Francisco State University and knew what CSUN was when she asked me where I am going to school. That's cool. Not too many people know where Northridge is.

Hanging out w/ these kids was fun. They love to make photos. So that was pretty cool.

After meeting them I headed out and tried to survey the city and look for things and people enjoying their Mayan culture. It was a real hot day and there wasn't too many people out on the streets. So I struck out. But I am sure there will be more opportunities to make photos of their customs and how they try to hold on to their roots when living so far away from their homeland.

After that I went home and relaxed. I went out for my three-mile run and it wasn't an easy task. It was too hot to be outdoors. But I have been slacking off on my running and these past two weeks I have been really good about doing my workouts. I don't want to kill the momentum. So, I went out.

A little bit after coming back from my run. I got ready and went out on the town -- finally! I've been having trouble going out because it's taking me some time to get adjusted to the high-cost living in South Florida. It's not as cheap as it is in Texas, that's for sure. But tonight I hung out w/ some of the other interns. We went to D&Bs in Hollywood and played some pool. I only got to meet two of the interns. So, I hope I get to meet the rest soon.
