El Sentinel/Sun-Sentinel Internship

Day 38 (Sat., Oct. 8)

It's good to have a day off. It's also good to enjoy a social life. Man, it was time to regain some of that social life that I have put on hold during the first month of the internship. I am getting into a routine that includes just work and running, so I had to break the cycle today.

So, I started the day by doing my daily run. I figured I have today and tomorrow off, so I should push myself a little more in my running. So, I doubled up today and did six miles instead of my usual three miles. It was a hot day and running six miles at 11 a.m. wasn't the best idea. But I pushed myself and I was able to get that done. I came home and turned on the t.v. hoping to watch the Texas/Oklahoma game. However, the Red River Shootout wasn't very important in this part of the country and it wasn't on regular t.v. I was a little disappointed because this is one of the oldest rivalries in the history of college football. It's definitely an important game for those living in Texas and Oklahoma. It's also a very important game to anyone who knows anything about college football. I figured the game would be on some satellite t.v. somewhere so I showered and put on my burn orange shirt, threw on my cowboy hat and went around the corner to Hooters. Walking into Hooters was cool because everyone was looking at me. I guess a UT fan around here is something odd. Unfortunately, Hooters has regular cable and they weren't carrying the game. Boooooo!!!

I walked across the street to Hot Shots, a cool pool hall/bar. I walked in and the game was on, cool!!! Tejas was winning and it went on to destroy the Okies. It was the first time in six years that UT had come out victorious. It was about time. It was very cool being there because there were a few other UT fans. It was also cool because I was able to enjoy some beer and hot wings, two things that I have been away from for over six weeks. Since I have been running a lot, I figured drinking and eating out would defeat the purpose, so I have been away from that. But today I was watching football and what goes better w/ that than beer and hot wings?

I ended the day at Dave and Buster's w/ five other interns. It was our farewell to Tanya Caldwell, she's a reporting intern that is headed to California. She'll be an intern w/ the L.A. Times this fall. So, if any of you guys bump into her out there in L.A., make sure to take care of her the way Floridians are taking care of me. Also on hand were Cynthia, Chris and Yolanda, three other Sun-Sentinel interns who are from the Los Angeles area. Wow, looks like Californians are taking over Florida. Danny Sanchez also showed up. He's a local guy from the Miami area. He's pretty cool and works on the web site as an intern. It was fun playing video games and having dinner. Tonight I felt like I actually had friends. It's about time!
