Day 47 (Fri., Oct. 28)

The cool thing about being part of a team is that you get to
focus on different aspects of the hurricane and not try to cover
everything at once. My assignment this morning was to follow
an auto glass installer and see how much work the hurricane
has brought him.

It was fun trailing Paul because I got a chance to forget about
the overall destruction and focus just on the windshield factor.
Plus the guy and his assistant, Marty, were very cool to me.
Especially Marty, who grew up in the San Fernando Valley and
graduated from Granada Hills High School, a school which I played
sports against during my high school athletic career. It was
cool to see another Californian.

This is the kitchen at Paul's house. His wife, Debbi, used
the cupboard doors as a way to keep track of all the jobs Paul
must do. At 1 p.m. Paul and his workers were booked through
Nov. 15 and calls continued to come through.

On my way back to the office, I got a call to go find "the
big rig that's selling generators somewhere on Hillsborough".
I was able to find it and I hung out there and took photos of
it. More than half of Broward County is still in the dark, so
generators are an esential thing. I hope people are not leaving
the generators indoors.
Oh, speaking of that, the photos I shot yesterday at the generator-related
death made the front page of our Local section. When covering
a crisis like this, having a front-page clip is amazing. I felt
really cool. I am glad to do my part in the hurricane coverage.

It's amazing how many people need gas. Most of So. Florida
is still w/o power and many things are closed, so I wonder what's
the rush for all these people to go out and get gas.

Later, I was out on Sunrise Boulevard and saw the above photo.
It's quite ironic how the Shell gas station's sign was changed
to "hell", that's pretty much the overall feeling
at gas stations because of the lack of power and the long lines.

You know it's a pretty strong hurricane when planes are flipped
over because of the strong winds.

This lifeguard stand at Ft. Lauderdale Beach wasn't so lucky
either.
