Texas Journal -- Part II:
Standard-Times Internship

Day 2 (Weds., June 1)

.

A year ago I walked into my first very own apartment. Today I did the same. I got into Texas early in the morning. Took a lot of naps through the trip. I think overall I took about eight or nine naps. Signs that I am getting old. Last year Sal and I took just two naps as we drove 1,501 miles in 25 hours. We caravanned, so it helped. This time, however, it was hard to stay focused so I had to take naps. It's only the healthy thing to do as I wanted to get here in one piece.

I got into San Angelo by midday after completing the 1,390 mile tour. This trip was nice. I got to see a new place (the meteor crater) and saw reindeer on the road. I had a lot of time to think. I still can't believe that this happened. It all happened so quickly that I didn't get a chance to think about the situation until now. It's weird how things happen in life. Unfortunately, I am in a sort of unstable time in my life -- college. The semester is packed with papers, readings, lectures and work. During the vacation, we journalism students scramble to get away and go get some hands-on experience.

It's nice to say that I am in Tejas because of my skills and my talent. That says a lot. It means that even though I dedicate a lot of time to my studies and get jammed-packed during the semester, it's all worth it. No one can take that.

I thought a lot today. I had to. After settling in, taking a bath, and napping a little more, I headed out on the town to see what it had to offer. This is going to be interesting. I am going from the San Fernando Valley and its half million population to a small town of 88,000. I did see potential for great photography. There's a river-walk like the one in San Antonio (minus the restaurants) that looked beautiful at sunset. Sorry, no photos of that. I was trying to learn the city and "Stephanie" is going to be busy all summer, so she had the day off.

Besides the touring of the city, I just unpacked and settled into my new apartment. I had good feelings moving into it as soon as I walked up to the building when Doris, who was showing me to my apartment, walked up to apartment #3. Now, that's really cool. That's my favorite number, so I am pretty sure I will be enjoying staying in it. I made the apartment a little comfortable by putting up the little things that I brought. Some of those things that I cannot leave home w/o is my Aztec art, Starbucks skyline series mugs, and a poster of Popeye. I like my place, it's half a mile from work. The highway is a quarter mile away. And it's furnished, unlike last year. I have one more free day and I start the internship on Friday. So, tomorrow will be some homework time and exploring the town will be a task.

Oh by the way, yeah that's an Club America jersey from the Mexico Soccer League. I didn't want to take it off since it's CHAMPION after its 6-3 win on Sunday. WoooHooo!!
