Day 3 (Thrs., June 2)
Sorry, there are no photos for you to view today. Today was
pretty much lazy day. I did get a lot of stuff done, however.
First, I woke up early and went on a hunt for an iron. I forgot
my iron and I needed one since I had orientation at the newspaper
today at 9 a.m. So, at 8:10 a.m. I headed out to find an iron.
I haven't met a single neighbor, so I couldn't just ask to borrow
one. Cool thing about this town is that there is not traffic,
unlike Southern California. So, driving from one side of town
to the other in 10 minutes seemed incredible. I couldn't believe
it.
I got my iron, took a shower, ironed and headed out the door
in 40 minutes. There is no way I could do that in Los Angeles.
I could get spoiled living in a place like this. Work is 1.5
miles away and I get there in three minutes. Not bad, compared
to a 45 minute drive to do a 20-mile drive in L.A.
I did a lot of paperwork at the paper today. First, I went
to sign some papers and headed out to a drug test screening.
At the hospital, I met Jose, who took care of the whole process.
While talking with him, it turned out he is from Thousand Oaks,
which is just outside of the San Fernando Valley. What a small
world. He gave me the rundown on the town and it seemed a little
scary. I hope he wasn't too serious, but I have all summer to
make my own opinions about the place. Anyways, it was nice to
see another Californian. Later I headed back to the office for
more paperwork. That's where I met three other interns. Elizabeth
is from California, too. San Jose, to be exact. Cool. I don't
feel like the only one around anymore.
Besides going to do the stuff at the office, I met two of my
photo co-workers. They seemed cool. I start tomorrow, so it
was cool to get in there a day early and introduce myself. Besides
that, all I did was relax at the apartment. I got a phone line,
which is good because the Starbucks internet service signal
was driving me nuts. One second I had reception on my laptop.
Next, I had to restart my web pages in order to answer a simple
email. What a waste of time.
A funny thing happened today. I had a little break in between
going to the drug test and going back for more orientation (or
the Oriental place, as George Lopez says on his stand-up CD
"Team Leader"). That's when I came home and made a
great cup of coffee. It smelled great and I was ready to start
enjoying my cup of joe, when I realized I didn't have any sugar.
That's the trouble of moving to a new place, you're always missing
something. As earlier in the day, I still have not made any
friends at the apartments, this place seems pretty lonely, so
I couldn't ask anyone for a cup of sugar. Dang, it would have
been a good way to talk to a cute neighbor, huh? Oh well, lost
my chance. But I think the situation would have been creepy
being that the convenience store is 100 yards away from my door.
I don't think I am ever going to be at a need for anything with
the store that close to me. Later on, I did a little bit of
grocery shopping and I cooked me some quick dinner.
Other than that, I just relaxed at the place and talked on
the phone. I didn't have any energy as the road trip really
took a lot out of me. It also doesn't help that the week before
I took the trip I had three major finals and spend as much time
enjoying the SoCal beaches before coming out here. I was pretty
tired, but I think I am now caught up on my rest. You can tell
I was so tired just by looking around the apartment this morning.
When I am tired and/or anxious, I sleep walk. Last nite I did
plenty of that. I don't remember any of it, but the evidence
was all there. The door to the closet in the living room was
wide open. My pillow made it from my bed to the living room
floor. The kitchen light was on. I drank three bottles of water,
or at least I think I drank them. I didn't see any wet spots
anywhere. So, I know I did that last nite.
Tomorrow I start work. So, I am excited.
