Day 04 (Fri., June 3)
I started work today. I walked into the office this morning
already expecting to work. That's exactly how it went. After
getting to know my boss and the rest of the staff in the newsroom
I was sent out on my first assignment. The local junior high
school is going under some remodeling over the summer. Next
semester, it will be working as a ninth-grade only school because
of the overflow of students at the local high school. It was
fun getting to work. Since I have been busy with photo editor
stuff at school and taking five courses, I didn't really have
much time for a "real" job in the last three months.
In fact, since I was freelancing in Dallas last fall and winter,
I pretty much have not had a "real" job setting since
last September. Today was kinda cool. I went into my assignment
with open eyes. I was a little bit nervous, but that went away
quickly. The photo above is of the gym at the school and its
new floor. It was all shinny and stuff. However, going into
the building was not all pretty. As soon as the custodian closed
the door behind him and headed back to his interrupted lunch
break, I was left alone in the gym. It was fine until I started
hearing all kinds of noises. It was pretty creepy. I can hear
basketballs bouncing. I can hear screaming - not loud. I can
hear footsteps. I was a little concerned. Anyways, I forgot
all about the noises and started shooting around. I wish I had
a basketball to shoot some hoops. Oh well.
Tonite is Friday and I am stuck in the apartment - by choice.
I didn't want to go out anywhere just yet. I want to relax and
enjoy my new apartment. It's so comfortable and big that I really
didn't want to do anything but lay in the hot tub and relax. I
contemplated inviting some of my friends from Dallas to come over.
However, this would have been a five-hour drive and I am sure
they wouldn't be up for it. Besides, I will be out there later
this month for the National Association of Hispanic Journalists
Convention in Fort Worth. I was lucky and got an internship with
the NAHJ student project. I will be going over there to show what
I can do. This is similar to the internship I did in
New
York City last year with the Society of Professional Journalists.
So when I go there, I should have enough time to hang out with
my old friends.
Another reason I didn't want to go out is because I have a
busy weekend. I have four assignments in two days. Come back
and see what I got myself into.
