Day 06 (Sun., June 5)
Today was pretty cool. My first photo was published in the
Standard-Times. It was the photo from the drag boat racing that
I showed you yesterday. It was printed big and it was five columns
wide. Which is the biggest the paper can run a photo on the
front page. I think I am going to love the exposure here. My
first photo runs that big on the front page. Wooohooo.
As you know from reading yesterday's comments, I am culture-shocked.
You would think that my time in Dallas last summer got me ready
for things. But today I feel as if it didn't get me ready at
all. The first assignment of the day included bass fishing.
I had to drive another hour to O.H. Ivie Reservoir to document
the Big Bass Tournament. It was fun to see how this was done.
Although I didn't get to see much of the fishing, I did get
to experience some new things.

First... I saw a family or road runners... It wasn't the first
time I saw a road runner, but it was cool as it just hung out
near the area where I was shooting and never went away.

Second... I got to ride on a speed boat. Jed Davenport of Sonora
was kind enough to take me on a ride along the lake as he drove
60-plus MPH. I had been on boats before, but never going that
fast. It was fun.
Here is the photo that was submitted for publication:

Later on I went to the Rollerz Outlet Car Show here in downtown
San Antonio. This was the only thing this weekend that didn't
make me feel out of place. I have always liked lowriders and
been to many shows in California, especially in San Fernando
and East Los Angeles, which are hosts for big lowrider shows.
I had a great idea that could have been a great photo. However,
the only chance I got was ruined. My idea was to use a car that
was on "three-wheel" stand and some kind of fan reaction.
When I got it, a person walked in the background and the photo's
meaning changed completely. It went from a male checking out
a car, to what seemed as if the guy was checking out the girl's
behind. Now, that's not what happened in reality (I hope), but
the way the photo was shot, it looks like that's what is going
on. See for yourself:

I told ya. It's questionable. If the womyn wasn't in the background,
this would have been a great photo because of the guy's body
language. Instead, we went with the photo below as the cover
of the newspaper and web site...

Quite different, don't you think? Oh by the way, if you want
to see any of my photos in actual publication. Go to the Standard-Times
web site to see for yourself.
Here's another cool photo from today's car show.

Cute, ain't it?
Finally, I learned a valuable lesson today. Always go with
your instincts and maybe you can come up with a cool photo.
As I drove back from O.H. Ivie, I saw a cool setting on the
water on the Concho River as I crossed over the Concho Bridge.
I pulled over and started shooting the setting. As I approached
the edge, I came across a fisherman by the name of Marvis Schneider
of Midland, who was enjoying quiet time on the river while fishing.
I wish I knew how to fish, I want to take advantage of the quiet
time. I love thinking and spending time with myself. I should
definitely learn how to fish before I leave Tejas. Anyways,
here are the photos:

One thing led to another!
