Day 38 (Fri., July 15)
I watched Napoleon Dynamite! I watched Napoleon Dynamite!
I have been wanting to watch that movie for a long time. I
actually bought the "Vote For Pedro" shirt last year
right before the presidential election and wore it on Nov. 2
as a way to show I was enjoying the election. Blah, the election
turned out to be something I didn't like. But still, I got the
shirt and I had been wanting to watch the movie ever since.
Today I had a four-hour break because I had a 7 a.m. assignment
and didn't have to be back to the office until later. I really
got a kick out of Napoleon Dynamite. I can see how people might
take it too literal and think it's a dumb movie. I love it.
It's simplicity makes for a great way to send a message. It's
also some sort of romance/love story, and what can go wrong
w/ that? I love Pedro, his character is so cool. It's so simple.
Reminds me of my favorite movie of all time: Dumb and Dumber.
Yeah, it's a stupid movie, but yet it's funny as dirt. Don't
get me wrong, I also like good movies w/ a message. Especially
independents. Right now on my list of movies to see are Osama
(a great feminist look at the Afghanistan culture) and Japon
(not too familiar w/ the topic, but I believe it has a great
Mexican message).
Having such a great weekend last week made me realize I am
homesick. Or maybe it made me homesick. But then again I was
already writing about homesickness before I headed out to Houston.
Well, today I didn't feel so homesick. I was sent out on an
assignment to hang out w/ George and Betty Taylor. The Taylors
are celebrating their 40th anniversary this weekend by drag
racing each other. This couple has drag raced in the past and
own three Camaro Z28 beauties. While being around them, I can
see why this couple was able to stay together for such a long
time. They care and love each other. They are equals. They enjoy
the same things including drag racing and love for their religion,
which should be the foundation of all families. If you don't
have a common religious faith, then it's going to be hard to
form a family. Their family is just like all the other families
I have met here in West Texas. They are all very welcoming.
Their warmth is felt right off the bat. I really like hanging
out with them. Tomorrow is the big race between them, so I will
be out there capturing the moments. So, I can't wait for that.
In the meantime, here are some photos from today:
