Texas Journal -- Part II:
Standard-Times Internship

Day 49 (Tues., July 26)

Getting ready for the school year. That's the story I covered today. Wow, summer's almost over. I go back to school soon. Speaking of school. I wish I was done w/ it. Today I got a call from Bobby Sanchez, the Al Dia photo editor. He was my mentor last year when I enjoyed a summer internship in Dallas. He was calling to alert that there will be a job opening at Al Dia. If you're one of my friends in the area up there, go apply! It's a great opportunity. I wish I was done w/ school so that I can go do it. But priorities are priorities and I am not going to be side-tracked. Not even when a great opportunity like Al Dia is put on the table. Well, like George Taylor told me tonight at dinner: "you'll have no problem finding a job". He's a very smart man. So, I am believing him for now.

I have about a month of freedom. Then I go back to school. Wow! I will be graduating soon. I don't know how to feel about that. I am still not mentally ready to leave school. I just love school too much. Going to class and learning something new every day is amazing. Perhaps a master's degree could be in the future. We'll see.

The first two photos are from the local jr. high that was made into an all-freshmen campus to help w/ the over-crowded high school. It was cool going to the school today. If you remember, that's the school I went the first day on the job. I was so nervous. Today I walked around relaxed and was able to see more things. Last time I was forcing my vision. I think I did a better job today than I did some 45 days ago.

After that I headed to meet up w/ Amy Mullins and her fiance Travis Walls. They are a blind couple. Amy is a music major at Angelo State University. The two were really cool to hang out w/. It made me appreciate my job. My goal is to reach everyone in the community w/ my photography. To give them a different view about their lives in their environment. Well, how do you do that for a blind couple. I never really thought about those who don't get to see my photography. I love photography and love to see great images. I often spend a while looking at photo web sites looking for inspiration and to "borrow" ideas. I find great photos that make me feel good. But I guess I never thought about that portion of society that aren't fortunate enough to see photography. This couple is very cool. They have so many gadgets to live their normal day. It's really quite cool. They check e-mail, browse the internet and even play a sort of a video game. They are not really missing out on anything.

Tonight I had dinner w/ my adoptive family. I met the Taylors for dinner again at Chilango's. It's always good to hang out w/ them. They inspire me. I want to live a long relationship w/ my partner that long some day. Yeah, that would be cool. They have taken a special interest in me and I really appreciate their friendship. As I wrote earlier, I discussed the Al Dia job opening w/ them and they were very cool about what they said. George just told me to focus on what I want to do. I want to finish school and I will be doing soon. But their encouraging words helped out a lot. Thanks guys.
