Day 62 (Mon., August 8)
Rain came down hard today. So, as I wrote the
other day, I headed out to cover the perfect rain photo.
It's imperative that the paper has a good photo and story about
the rain every time it rains. It's funny how I saw the best
photo of the day and I couldn't take it. That photo was of a
very good looking man who was changing a flat tire while the
rain came down hard. Why didn't I shoot it? Well, that's because
I was the unlucky person who was switching the tire. Ok, maybe
I lied a little when I said the man was good looking, but still,
nice photo op. At some point during my rain expedition, my tire
went flat and I had to switch it. It would have been a good
opportunity for a photographer to get the photo of someone soaked
and stuck in such predicament.
I am scared to be around so many small towns. Even though I
have been around here for two months, I am still afraid. That
was highlighted today when I headed out to Robert Lee, a small
town some 33 miles north of San Angelo. I was there to shoot
a high school teacher getting ready for the school year. In
talking to her, I found out there are 80 students enrolled in
the school. That number is so high. That's the size of two classrooms
during my senior year at Grant High in Van Nuys, Calif. My school
had so many students compared to that. I was reminded how small
this town is. And I was reminded that it's going to take more
than a summer to get adjusted to things around here.
