Dallas, Texas Journal:
Al Dia
Internship
Day 20 (Fri., June 18)

Caption: Carlon Anderson, 14, of Dallas makes a dunk attempt
during a Juneteenth celebration at Martin Luther King Jr. Community
Center in Dallas.
Wow, my sports photography bias got in the way again. I went
to shoot a Juneteenth celebration at the Martin Luther King
Jr. Community Center and I came back with the above photo. It
shows that even when the event has nothing to do with sports,
good old Julio will try to make it a sports photo. So, you are
probably wondering what Juneteenth is. Especially if you are
from my home town back in Calif. Juneteenth
is the celebration of June 19, 1865, when Texas finally freed
its slaves. I had never heard of such thing, but it's a major
thing for African-Americans and other races of color here in
Texas. They had many activities, like performers, game booths,
food, and health check ups at this event. But the basketball
hoop competition among children caught my attention and I came
back to the office with the above photo. I am not sure if this
photo lies under making an unordinary photo from an ordinary
assignment, but I know Al Dia managing editor, Alfredo Carbajal,
liked it. Today was a cool day. I got to the office and opened
up the Dallas Morning News and on page two of the Metro section
I saw my photo from yesterday on there.
That photo ran front page of Al Dia and on page 2 of the DMN,
what a great way to start the day. Tonight I hung out with some
of the other interns. We went to a bar in Greenville and it
was fun, well after they finally brought my drink. I can't believe
they took 10 minutes to bring my drink while they took two minutes
to bring the drinks of everyone else. People who know me, know
that I love giving way big tips even when the service is normal.
So, it was a very hard decision to not give a tip to this rude
and mean waitress. I should have left at least a dollar, and
ordered more stuff being that we spent about two hours there.
But she was just too mean and I had to make a statement.
