Day 80 (Tue., Aug. 17)

Today was a really weird day. I was in some sort of shock,
I guess you can say. First, Salvador and I went out for our
final meal together this summer. I treated him to breakfast
as a way to send him off and wishing him a good road trip. He
hit the road sometime today at around 3 p.m. I talked to him
at around 7 p.m. and by then he had already driven more than
300. Wow, that boy wants to get home soon. Who can blame him?
There's so much that awaits him back there, including his little
niece, who he couldn't help talking about every time he was
home sick.
In some sort of way I was a lil jealous that he was going back
to his family after having a successful summer. Me, on the other
hand, I have two more weeks left on my internship and I have
decided to stay here a little longer. I decided this about three
or four weeks ago. I figured that I would gain a lot more knowledge
about photojournalism if I stayed a little longer. I finally
got to learn the city and started relating to the people, so
I want to use that to my advantage and expand my photo skills
by being able to put all of it together.
As you might remember from Day 51,
when I mentioned that Bobby Sanchez had asked me what I thought
about extending the internship. I gave it a lot of thought and
came out with the conclusion that I would stay and take advantage.
Well, today I was finally told that it was impossible to extend
the internship and that the only way I could stay is if I decide
to be a freelancer. I was sort of disappointed, but I understood
the situation. I just wish I had know about this earlier. Who
knows, I would probably be somewhere halfway on the journey
home along with Salvador right now. However, I the past month
I have spent it trying to make this thing happen and I believe
I have to take this challenge. I am only staying for the fall
semester, so I am headed home sometime soon, I suppose. So,
right now I am sort of excited about taking on the monster that
is freelancing. I have seen many people succeed off of it, so
I know I can do it. All I gotta do is get strength and guidance
from God and keep on working hard the way my parents taught
me. So, freelancing, here I come!
Oh yeah, today's photo is of a couple of "gifted"
kids at a special elementary school that hosts 55 bright students.
I was there this afternoon and I came back with the above photo.
I liked the angle and the crop.
