Day 83 (Fri., Aug. 20)

Today I went and bought my camera, first thing in the morning.
As soon as I got her, I put her to work. Hey, if a camera is
going to cost me that much, it better get to work right away,
right?
Today was a very emotional day to work under. I had to cover
the different aspects of a triple homicide that happened in
Oak Cliff in the early hours yesterday morning. I went to the
house of the family members of the three immigrant men who were
killed. It was sad being there as there was a lot of sorrow.
The t.v. station was there, and we were there; so it was hard
for the family to go through their pain while we were there.
However, they were very nice and let us into their home to do
our job. Later, I spent three hours at the county jail waiting
for the suspects to be brought in as they were caught a few
hours before. However, my deadline came and the suspects were
not brought in to the jail by then, so we didn't have photos
of that.
I learned something today while being at the county jail --
which is great news because I feel as if my learning process
has slowed down ever since my photo editor got injured and he
has not looked at my work closely with me. I went to the county
jail with the writer, thinking that we would get shots of the
suspects right away and go back to the office. However, since
the suspects were taking long and she had an early deadline,
the writer had to leave and I stayed behind. I learned today
that "you should never, ever, go with a writer on a breaking
news story" as Bobby Sanchez explained to me. I should
have driven myself there to avoid any problems. So, I finally
learned something new today. Cool! That's what I am here for
-- to learn.
