NAHJ Internship

Day 3 (Tues., June 14)

Now today was more like I expected the internship to begin. Yesterday was pretty slow as we all tried to figure out what we were doing and how to go about doing so. Right off the bat I was working, which is what I came here to do.

First, I was sent out with Gilda of El Paso and Francisco from San Antonio to cover the hottest story around Fort Worth this week. We went out to a small catholic church where they had a glass that was taken off a window on an apartment nearby. This glass, however, was no ordinary glass, as many people at the church agreed. This glass had a reflection of what they said was Jesus H. Christ. Now, I am not sure what they were seeing, but I didn't see anything. There are many people that have gone to see the glass and say they see the image. Over the last two weeks people have come from all over, including the Philippines as one priest claimed. While there, we met the lady that lives at the apartment where it happened. She told us the story, but still we didn't see anything. She also showed us a small artifact (pictured below) she found near the window, which she failed to identify, but said it had the image of the Virgin Mary. This lady also told us that at the house where she used to live, the Virgin appeared on a tree. This lady must have some sort of religious thing going on as she gets to see all kinds of visions. It's too bad I can't agree with her. I have issues with a lot of beliefs in the church, in spite calling myself a true catholic. I guess questioning the "vision" makes me less of a catholic, but I just wasn't believing it.

We headed back to the office to work on our stuff. There, I ran into Aurora (Miami) and she was being pretty silly. I can tell I am going to like this girl because she's dorky and fun. Nice combination. I remember seeing her the first time a few days ago at the dinner reception for the interns. Immediately, she caught my eye. She were green and her well-placed makeup made her stand out. I think I had to check myself at one point that night when I couldn't stop looking at her. Anyways, she's got something that I think is cool: sillyness.

Speaking of sillyness, there she was (below) taking a funny toast as she had dinner next to her dear friend Lynette (Puerto Rico) at the Pour House Bar. I hung out with the crew for a little bit as I had a 11 p.m. assignment. It was nice hanging out as we watched a little of the Spurs/Pistons playoff basketball game. Of course, I was sucked away from my cold coke to make a few photos for Josh (Colorado) for a story he was doing on Fort Worth basketball fans. I excused myself and went to work.

Today's assignment was to capture the nightlife at Billy Bob's. This place claims to be the home of the largest Honky Tonk. From what I learned, a honky tonk is a dance floor. I guess it does have a large dance floor, but then again, anything looks big when there are no patrons on sight. The place was lonely. If it wasn't for a group of computer people who were having a little gathering after completing a day at a convention earlier today, then I wouldn't have had an easy time getting the feel of the place and its costumers. When I approached the crowd, however, they were almost on their way out. I had to make sure to work hard and quick in order to get as many photos of them to show that people have fun at this place. It was a good quick drill in making photos in a short period of time.

After they left, I walked around for a while looking for things to shoot. There was many things that seemed cool, but it's hard when there are no customers around. While talking with a representative to the club, I found out that this place allows children to come in despite its bar atmosphere. I shot the above photo to show that kids can have a good time at a bar and that this location is a good example.

Lastly, I found a Texas Hold 'Em poker room, which saved my butt. I think the above photo complements the other two. This is definitely a place where you can go have a variety of activities and never be bored. It's too bad there weren't much people around.
